âSheâs fine,â Nico said for the third time.
Keegan huffed, turning back around and slumping against his seat, arms crossed. âI donât like having her out of my sight.â
âIf you canât trust Rick to take care of her, I donât know that this pack is a good fit for you,â Nico said carefully.
Keegan whipped his head around to stare at him. Nico was driving the SUV to the covenâs shop, Tashmica ahead of them and Rick and Rosie behind in the little rental since it had a car seat for her. Gabriel had given Keegan one last hug, then headed toward his motorcycle, telling Keegan to come out to his place for dinner to meet his mates as soon as he could.
Which⦠it was still crazy to Keegan that the man who had asked Keegan to hide his scent to prevent shifters from having an advantage over him had broken the spell and was mated to not one but two shifters, the bite marks on either side of his neck an unshakeable testament to their bond.
The sight of them had sent a shiver down Keeganâs spine and an aching pit of want to open up in his stomach.
But Nicoâs stiff, impersonal attitude since theyâd gotten into the SUV was getting on his damn nerves.
âFirst of all,â he said, doing his best to keep his voice as even as Nico had, âdonât make it sound like Iâm a terrible person for not trusting my daughter with some stranger I donât really know. Just because I trust Rick enough to ask to join his pack doesnât mean he gets carte blanche for everything else, especially when it comes to her.â
Nico started to open his mouth, but Keegan wasnât fucking done, thank you.
âSecond of all, itâs not that I donât trust him to take care of her. Iâve missed so much of her life. Now that I get to be with her when sheâs not with me, it feels like my lungs have been ripped out of my chest and I canât fucking breathe.â
He may have failed to keep his tone level, but he wasnât sorry for raising his voice. Rosie was his whole damn life, and he wouldnât apologize for worrying about her.
Nico didnât say anything for a minute, shooting Keegan a glance before focusing back on the road. The town of Meyerville was just coming into view when he sighed softly and said, âIâm sorry.â
âYouâre sorry,â Keegan repeated slowly.
âYes. I shouldnât have said this might not be the pack for you or implied that I knew how you should act as her parent.â Nico sighed, reaching up to run his fingers through his hair. It was still longer than Keegan remembered from last fall, but he had a feeling itâd be the perfect length to sink his hands into and hold on. âTo be honest⦠I donât know why youâre here, Keegan. Not really. And itâs messing with my head.â
Keegan stared at his strong profile, running his eyes over his pointed nose, full lips, and strong, square jaw.
