“She’s fine,” Nico said for the third time.

Keegan huffed, turning back around and slumping against his seat, arms crossed. “I don’t like having her out of my sight.”

“If you can’t trust Rick to take care of her, I don’t know that this pack is a good fit for you,” Nico said carefully.

Keegan whipped his head around to stare at him. Nico was driving the SUV to the coven’s shop, Tashmica ahead of them and Rick and Rosie behind in the little rental since it had a car seat for her. Gabriel had given Keegan one last hug, then headed toward his motorcycle, telling Keegan to come out to his place for dinner to meet his mates as soon as he could.

Which… it was still crazy to Keegan that the man who had asked Keegan to hide his scent to prevent shifters from having an advantage over him had broken the spell and was mated to not one but two shifters, the bite marks on either side of his neck an unshakeable testament to their bond.

The sight of them had sent a shiver down Keegan’s spine and an aching pit of want to open up in his stomach.

But Nico’s stiff, impersonal attitude since they’d gotten into the SUV was getting on his damn nerves.

“First of all,” he said, doing his best to keep his voice as even as Nico had, “don’t make it sound like I’m a terrible person for not trusting my daughter with some stranger I don’t really know. Just because I trust Rick enough to ask to join his pack doesn’t mean he gets carte blanche for everything else, especially when it comes to her.”

Nico started to open his mouth, but Keegan wasn’t fucking done, thank you.

“Second of all, it’s not that I don’t trust him to take care of her. I’ve missed so much of her life. Now that I get to be with her when she’s not with me, it feels like my lungs have been ripped out of my chest and I can’t fucking breathe.”

He may have failed to keep his tone level, but he wasn’t sorry for raising his voice. Rosie was his whole damn life, and he wouldn’t apologize for worrying about her.

Nico didn’t say anything for a minute, shooting Keegan a glance before focusing back on the road. The town of Meyerville was just coming into view when he sighed softly and said, “I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry,” Keegan repeated slowly.

“Yes. I shouldn’t have said this might not be the pack for you or implied that I knew how you should act as her parent.” Nico sighed, reaching up to run his fingers through his hair. It was still longer than Keegan remembered from last fall, but he had a feeling it’d be the perfect length to sink his hands into and hold on. “To be honest… I don’t know why you’re here, Keegan. Not really. And it’s messing with my head.”

Keegan stared at his strong profile, running his eyes over his pointed nose, full lips, and strong, square jaw.
